Taking the national stage

October 16, 2010
By Cindy Votruba

MARSHALL?- Adri DeBoer is taking off from school next week, but she has a good excuse.

DeBoer. a senior at Marshall High School, was selected to be part of the National FFA chorus at the national convention Oct. 21-23 in Indianapolis, Ind. She headed there today because the chorus spends three days in rehearsal before the convention opens.

She has only been in FFA since her junior year and is currently the Marshall FFA chapter secretary. This past spring, she auditioned for the state chorus.

Adri DeBoer is set to sing with the National FFA chorus this next week during the national convention in Indianapolis, Ind.

"I?made state and sang at state,"?DeBoer said. From there, she auditioned for the national chorus.

Students submit audition tapes to be accepted to the national chorus and are nominated by their state associations. DeBoer said she sang "Temporary Home"?by Carrie Underwood and the National Anthem along with scales to show her range.

"I'm a very deep alto, alto one or two in the state chorus,"?DeBoer said.

She learned that she was accepted in August to the national chorus.

"But my mom, she was strict, saying it was a bad thing,"?DeBoer said about getting the letter in the mail.

DeBoer said she was surprised at being chosen.

"I?didn't expect to get picked out of the people who auditioned,"?DeBoer said.

Then she started reading about the event and realized being chosen for the national chorus was a bigger deal than she thought.

Ten FFA students from Minnesota auditioned for the chorus and only three, including DeBoer, got in. Eighty students from around the country are in the national chorus.

"I fly out Saturday (today) morning to Indianapolis," DeBoer said earlier this week.

She's been singing most of her life.

"I really enjoy singing and performing," DeBoer said.

She recently sang Sarah Bareilles' "Many the Miles"?at the Marshall High School homecoming talent show. DeBoer said she likes to sing deep country or jazz as it suits her voice.

"I have to listen to the music before I?sing it, I?can't sight read,"?DeBoer said.

Today through Tuesday, DeBoer said she and the other 79 members will practice as a whole choir and learning music together.

"There's kind of parodies of state songs, like 'Georgia,' and 'Sweet Home Alabama,'"?DeBoer said.

Other songs include the "Star-Spangled Banner" and "I'm In Love With A Boy From FFA,"?DeBoer said.

The chorus will perform several times during the 83rd annual National FFA convention.

"We sing in front of 55,000 people at Nationals,"?DeBoer said.

DeBoer said she doesn't know what to expect in the coming week as it's the first time she's attended a national convention, let alone perform at one.

"Really, I'm going in completely blind,"?DeBoer said. "I'm experiencing what nobody has in our chapter for a while."
