Tigers overcome 19-point deficit to upset Trojans

Marshall boys basketball coach Tom Critchley told his team before Friday's Southwest Conference game at Worthington to start the game like they were down by 10 points.

But it wasn't until they trailed 30-11 with 11 minutes left in the first half that the sense of urgency kicked in for the Tigers.

"Unfortunately, (the urgency) didn't happen until we got down," Critchley said. "We went to our full-court press and we took them out of their game."

Forcing the Trojans into 26 turnovers, and getting 39 combined points by Caleb Johnson and Lee Christianson, the Tigers overcame the 19-point deficit to take a 68-59 come-from-behind win over Worthington.

"We're proud in the fact that they kept competing," Critchley said.

"It's not that we were playing bad, we just couldn't score. We only had 12 turnovers, but we were too complacent on the offensive end. Once we made a couple, we got our confidence going."

Johnson led the way for the Tigers with a team-high 20 points, six rebounds and six assists. Christianson added 19 points and two steals.

Critchley said the most important thing Johnson brought was composure when Marshall was down.

"He provided some very positive energy for us," Critchley said.

The Tigers pressed on against the Trojans, trying to keep the ball away from 6-foot-7 posts Jalen Voss and Mitch Weg. Along with the full-court press, Critchley said the post duo of Collin Hoover and Brennan Cable outmuscled Worthington's big men.

"Their guards weren't able to get good work into the post, and Collin and Brennan did a good job forcing the posts away from the basket," Critchley said. "Between the ball pressure and our bigs knocking their bigs, they had to work for everything inside."

At 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the Southwest Conference, the Tigers travel to Jackson County Central on Tuesday.
