Peacocks snap losing streak in win over SMSU

On Saturday, Southwest Minnesota State women's basketball kept on its five-game slide, while Upper Iowa stopped its own two slides.

After beating the Mustangs 53-49 on Saturday in Fayette, Iowa, the Peacocks ended a 40-game Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference losing streak that dated back to Dec. 13, 2008, and also ended a 16-game losing streak.

Upper Iowa took a 26-15 lead at halftime. The Mustangs cut the Peacocks' lead to two with 35 seconds left, but were unable to complete the comeback, falling to 1-5 in the NSIC and 2-8 overall.

"That was the toughest part about the night," SMSU head coach Allison Kruger said. "We made strides, but we didn't win. The players felt themselves getting better and you expect the outcome to be a win. We got better as a team and that's what we have to take from this."

The Mustangs' top two scorers, Tori Fink and Abby Kenealy, got into foul trouble in the first half, hampering SMSU's offense. Fink ended up with a game-high 21 points, scoring 17 in the second half. Kenealy finished with six points in the loss.

Kenealy's limited time also hurt the Mustangs on the boards, as Upper Iowa out-rebounded SMSU 39-18.

"We gave up too many offensive rebounds," Kruger said. The Peacocks grabbed 14 offensive rebounds, while the Mustangs had six. "We also forced them into 27 turnovers, and if you do that, you should win."

Kruger said her team was making some improvements in Saturday's game, improvements that need to continue when the team returns from the Christmas break for a home game on Jan. 1 against Minnesota-Crookston.

"We are thinking new year, new team, so we're hoping to start something," Kruger said. "We want to attack the last two months and build up the program."
