Salvation Army donors and Marshall Hy-Vee customers got an extra treat Wednesday night, as a group of local kettle volunteers decided to sing Christmas carols instead of ringing bells. Tom Nordby, Brian Kruse, Fred Almer, Eldon and Jan Krull, and keyboardist Caroline Koska performed an impromptu concert while passers-by dropped money in the kettle.
Salvation Army scheduler Carrie Stiernagle said more community groups have been volunteering as bell ringers this year.
