After coming out flat on Monday, the Marshall girls hockey team made it their goal to come out in Tuesday's Schwan Cup game with high energy.
And while the Tigers only held a 1-0 lead after two periods against Long Prairie-Grey Eagle/Wadena-Deer Creek, Marshall's high energy paid off early in the third period.
Rachel Peters scored three of her five goals within the first three minutes of the third period, scoring all her goals in the final period en route to a 6-1 win over the Blue Devils at the Schwan's Super Rink in Blaine.
"We had talked about the importance of coming out with a lot of energy," Marshall head coach Kevin Schroeder said. "It was back and forth and we had a lot of opportunities in the first and second periods. They kept working hard and came out strong in the third, and things worked out."
Bridgette Louwagie put the Tigers on the board late in the second period with a goal. Maranda Esparza picked up an assist on the goal.
From there, Louwagie's goal opened the floodgates for Peters and Marshall.
Hanna Peterson had three assists in the game, all coming off of goals by Peters. Lauren Hanson and Dani Crowell each had an assist.
"We've always had close games with Long Prairie-Grey Eagle, and we knew what they were about," Schroeder said. "We carried a lot of intensity and the girls got what they worked for. It was just a good period for us."
At goaltender, Paige Moravetz stopped 27 shots for Marshall in the win. The Tigers outshot LPGE/W-DC 40-28.
In the final day of the Schwan Cup, Marshall (6-5 overall) plays South Central (Wis.) at 10:30 a.m. today in Blaine.
