The Marshall gymnastics team got off to a rough start to Thursday's road dual at New London-Spicer before the competition even began, losing junior Shelby Maes to an injury in warmups.
The Wildcats ended up topping Marshall 135-110.45, but Tigers head coach Amy Daniels was pleased with her team's effort despite the lopsided result.
"Not having Shelby took away from our overall score, but I was really proud of the girls (Thursday)," Daniels said. "They were, collectively, more relaxed and more mentally tough than I've seen them this season.
"It's good to see what they've been practicing starting to come through, but they've still got a long way to go."
Sophomore Nikki McNair won the overall title for the Tigers with a score of 35.675. She took first in the vault (9.25), first in the uneven bars (8.7), second on the balance beam (8.525) and first in the floor exercise (9.2).
While the Tigers generally expect a sound performance from McNair, a two-time state qualifier, Daniels said she was most excited about the performance of junior Stephanie St. Aubin in the floor exercise. St. Aubin was fourth in the event with a score of 8.175.
"For Stephanie to get fourth on the floor, that was huge. I'm really proud of her for that," Daniels said. "I think she's just polishing off what she already had and was just waiting for everything to come together. I think she still has more to add with a couple more tenths of a point of difficulty, but it was good to see her hard work pay off."
