March 17, 2011
By Chris Hmielewski

Hello Mustang fans!

I would like to feature our Mustang wheelchair basketball Team in this week's Hoofprints article. The Mustangs competed last weekend in the National Wheelchair Basketball Tournament at the University of Texas- Arlington. Southwest Minnesota State finishes its season with a sixth place finish in the national tournament, and a record of 14-10 on the season.

The Mustangs opened the tournament with a 61-51 loss to host University of Texas-Arlington on Thursday night.

SMSU bounced back with a 43-28 win over Edinboro University on Friday morning. With their season on the line, the Mustangs fought hard against the University of Missouri on Friday afternoon, losing 60-54 in overtime. Jacob Williams led the Mustangs in scoring throwing in 26 points in the final game of the season.

During last weekend's tournament festivities, the National Wheelchair Basketball Association announced that Southwest Minnesota State's Jacob Williams has been named Second Team All-American for the 2010-11 season. Williams was one of 10 players selected to the men's division All-American team. Williams, a native of Oak Creek, Wis., led the Mustangs, averaging 23 points per game grabbing 3.7 rebounds per game and dishing out 12 assists in the National Tournament.

SMSU's Kyle Timmerman was the recipient of the Frank Brasile Sportsmanship award for the second consecutive season. A native of Minneota, Timmerman averaged 8.3 points per game during the tournament while grabbing 10 rebounds and dishing out nine assists. The award's namesake, Frank Brasile, is a former commissioner in the intercollegiate division of the NWBA. He has been active in the sport for decades. Congratulations to Jacob, Kyle and the entire Mustang wheelchair basketball team on a successful season.
