Marshall, kids, lose a friendly face

August 4, 2011
Marshall Independent

To the editor:

This past week an important member of our community passed away. His name may not be familiar to you, but his face and presence will be missed.

For nearly 12 years, Francis Giefer safeguarded our children by ensuring that they safely crossed Main and C Streets in Marshall on their way to and from school.

Francis's commitment to the safety of our children and his dedication to his position as a school crossing guard during all weather conditions did not go unnoticed. His "old blue truck" parked near the Coke plant, him standing at the corner and, most important, his kindness toward our children, will be missed.

Francis's passing is a reminder for us to be thankful to those who have committed to the role as a school crossing guard. As we near the start of another school year, please drive carefully and be mindful of all the young children walking to and from school.
