Armed robbery report in Marshall turns out to be false

December 10, 2011
Marshall Independent

MARSHALL - A report of an armed robbery that led to the arrest of a Marshall man on Thursday night was revealed to be false, Marshall Police said Friday.

The person who made the false report is now in custody at the Lyon County jail, Police said.

Police took a report of an armed robbery at a Marshall apartment complex at 12:54 p.m. Thursday. The alleged victim said a male had pointed a gun at him and demanded money, a Marshall Police release said.

It was the second report of armed robbery in Marshall in the past week.

Police identified a subject with information provided by the alleged robbery victim and arrested a Marshall man, 24. Incident summary reports from Marshall Police showed several officers were involved with the arrest, which took place after 9 p.m. Thursday.

Detective Tim Tomasek of the Marshall Police said the number of responding officers was a cautionary measure, as the subject was still believed to be carrying a gun.

However, Police said further investigation revealed no robbery had taken place. The alleged victim admitted he made the story up because he was angry at the other person and wanted to get him in trouble, Police said.

The alleged robbery victim, a Detroit, Mich., man, 20, was arrested, and the case has been referred to the Marshall city attorney's office for consideration of charges of falsely reporting a crime, Police said.
