Yellow Medicine County reorganizes Human Services office

December 28, 2011
By Steve Browne , Marshall Independent

GRANITE FALLS - The Yellow Medicine County Board voted Tuesday to authorize the hiring of a social worker to fill a vacancy at the county's Family Services at the request of Director Peg Heglund, and reclassify three existing positions.

Heglund requested three positions in the Granite Falls office currently classified as office support and technical, office support senior, and enforcement aid and child support be reclassified as administrative secretaries.

The new classification would allow a more flexible assignment of work duties and allow them to assume more responsibilities, streamlining department functions, according to Heglund.

The board authorized a search for a replacement for Emily McGonigle, a social worker with Family Services for the past eight years. McGonigle is resigning to accept a position with Greater Minnesota Family Services.

The board also voted to contribute $5,000 to The Connection in Canby.

The Connection is a faith-based community center, founded in 2002 by the eight churches of the Canby ministerial association which provides before and after school activities for school children.

Commissioner Louis Sherlin, who made the motion, said the organization is staffed entirely by volunteers and is in dire need of operating funds.
