YMC to go forward despite Chippewa County decision on dam

January 25, 2012
Marshall Independent

The Yellow Medicine County Board decided to press forward with discussion on a joint powers agreement to assume ownership of the Minnesota Falls dam without Chippewa County at its regular meeting on Tuesday.

The Chippewa County Board decided not to participate in a joint powers agreement at its regular meeting on Jan. 17. Yellow Medicine County is in discussion with the city of Granite Falls and Granite Falls Energy to assume ownership of the 105-year-old dam, which has been condemned by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. The DNR wants the dam repaired or removed.

In other business, the board voted to accept an offer by the state of Minnesota Office of Enterprise Technology for an updated Voice Over Internet Protocol phone system. According to County Administrator Ryan Krosch, the cost of the hardware and phones will be approximately $100,000. Krosch said the new system will cost about $700 a month less to operate than the current system.

The board also voted to authorize the replacement of a bridge on County Road 7 over Stoney Run Creek. According to Krosch, the county has about $275,000 in bridge bonding funds available for the project.
