Rough Riders rally past Marshall

It was a tale of two halves on Friday night for the Marshall boys basketball team, which crossed the South Dakota border to take on Sioux Falls Roosevelt.

The Tigers took a 26-17 lead into halftime, but were roughed up in the second half of a 59-48 non-conference loss to the Rough Riders.

Marshall (14-8 overall) held Roosevelt to just five points in the first quarter, but Roosevelt's offense picked up as the game went on. The Rough Riders scored 12 points in the second quarter, 17 in the third and then sealed the game by outscoring Marshall 25-15 in the fourth.

"That first half was as well as we've played in awhile," Marshall head coach Tom Critchley said. "We were the aggressor in the first half, but in the second half they became the aggressor and we struggled to score.

"They got hotter and they got a lot of points off of some of our turnovers in the second half. They were able to brake us down to get to the basket and get to the free-throw line."

Three players did the majority of the scoring for the Rough Riders. Tyler Howard led the way with 18 points and seven boards, and Jeremiah Clark and Tom Nugteren each scored 13 points. Roosevelt went 19-for-25 from the free-throw line in the game.

Marshall's Aaron Mathiowetz paced the Tigers with 10 points, going 8-for-10 from the foul line. Mason Schnaible added nine points and Austin Saugstad had eight points and five boards. Marshall shot just 35.9 percent from the field.

The Tigers were dominated on the glass, with the Rough Riders holding a 39-23 rebounding edge.

"It was a really physical game," Critchely said. "We had to work so hard to rebound that we weren't able to get going in transition, and everything that we got in our half-court offense they really made us work for."

Marshall returns to Southwest Conference play on Thursday with a key road game against rival Worthington.
