The Southwest Minnesota State wheelchair basketball team played four games in Whitewater, Wis., over the weekend, finishing the action with a 1-3 record.
"It was a tough trip, but I was pleased with the way the kids played," said Mustangs head coach Lew Shaver. "We were able to use our full-court press against some pretty tough teams. That's something we can build upon."
The Mustangs played Alabama Friday evening, dropping an 84-47 contest. Alabama shot 63.5 percent from the field for the game and held SMSU to 36.8 percent shooting.
Jake Williams led the Mustangs in the loss, scoring a game-high 24 points. Kyle Timmerman added 12 points and six rebounds.
SMSU kicked off action Saturday against host Wisconsin-Whitewater. The Warhawks defeated SMSU 73-49 with four players scoring in double figures. Williams scored 21 points in the game, while Timmerman had 14 points and eight rebounds.
The Mustangs picked up their lone win of the weekend against Edinboro (Pa.), earning a 78-46 victory. Williams put up 26 points with six rebounds and five assists. Raymone Brown added 22 points and seven steals, Derek Klinkner had 10 points and 12 rebounds, and Timmerman tacked on 10 points.
In SMSU's final game, the Mustangs played a tight first half against Missouri and trailed by five at the break, but were outscored 38-19 in the second half of a 72-48 loss. Williams had 23 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals to lead the Mustangs. Timmerman added 15 points and seven rebounds, while Brown had 10 points and eight rebounds.
The Mustangs are off until the National Invitational Wheelchair Basketball Tournament, which opens March 7 in Champaign, Ill.
