The Southwest Minnesota State women's golf team got off to a rough start in its first competition of the 2012 spring season, shooting a team score of 370 in Day 1 of the Classic Club Invite at Classic Club Golf Course in Palm Desert, Calif.
The Mustangs sit in eighth place in the nine-team competition. Minnesota State-Mankato leads the tournament after shooting a first-round score of 334.
SMSU's Abby Gruber is playing as an individual at the tournament and shot a 13-over round of 85, which puts her in eighth place.
The Mustangs' KC Kane and Krista Weiszhaar each shot an SMSU team-low round of 17-over par and are tied for 23rd.
The second and final round of play begins today at 9 a.m. PST.
