The Southwest Minnesota State baseball team defeated St. Ambrose (Iowa) 13-3 on Saturday in Tucson, Ariz., to close out its nine-game, six-day spring trip. The Mustangs finished the week at 5-4 and improve to 7-4 overall.

SMSU piled up 17 hits against St. Ambrose, with Kyle Young leading the way. He went 4-for-4 from the plate with two triples, a double, three RBIs and three runs scored.

Young was one of six players to record a multi-hit game on Saturday. Doug Mead added three hits, while Jordon Kontz, Brian Ness, Jeff Watson and Ben Kroger each finished with two hits.

Ben Bartling got the win on the mound for SMSU, allowing three runs in five innings of work. All three runs came in the second inning. Bartling gave up five hits in the game and struck out three batters. He didn't give up a walk.

Steven Wehr, Colton Smit, Corby McGlauflin and Derek Skovbroten pitched the remaining four innings for SMSU, each of them working an inning without allowing a run.

SMSU resumes action Friday with a non-conference doubleheader against Northern State at the Metrodome in Minneapolis.
