Playing in its second tournament in two weeks, the Southwest Minnesota State women's golf team completed its spring trip with a 12th-place finish in the 21-team Texoma Chevy Dealers Lion Invitational in Pottsboro, Texas on Tuesday.

"Today's was the best of the four days that we've played in the last few weeks," said Mustangs head golf coach Ross Webskowski. "It's still not up to what we usually play like, but there's more confidence to play the level of golf we're capable of playing."

Taking SMSU's top score in the tournament was Krista Weiszhaar, who finished tied for 32nd place with a two-day score of 167. After shooting an 87 on Day 1, KC Kane recovered with a team-low 82 on Tuesday, finishing with a total of 169 (tied-37).

"She kept her composure and kept battling," Webskowski said of Kane. "She has been playing well. In the first round, she had a few bad holes at the end and she should have had a better score there. But she hit the ball extremely well and stayed strong throughout (Day 2)."

Tarleton State (Texas) won the tournament with a team score of 631, beating West Texas A&M by five strokes.

Taking medalist honors was Rebecka Surtevall of Arkansas Tech, who won by three strokes with a two-day score of 151.

SMSU is off for the next month, returning to the course on April 14 at the Augustana Invite in Sioux Falls, S.D.

With the time off, Webskowski said the goal is to get the team's short game up to snuff.

"We need to gain confidence in our putting and chipping," Webskowski said. "... It was exciting to see how we hit the ball in the four rounds we had. If we carry that over and work on our short game, we can make a run up the standings and conference."
