March 22, 2012
By Chris Hmielewski , Marshall Independent

Hello Mustang Fans!

Congratulations to SMSU head baseball coach Paul Blanchard for reaching 400 career wins in a sweep of Augustana College in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday in the Metrodome.

We also need to congratulate Mustang wrestler Justin Reinsma for earning All-American status by taking seventh place in the NCAA Division II National Wrestling Tournament held in Pueblo, Colo., two weeks ago. The SMSU wrestling team also had seven wrestlers earn Division II All-Academic honors. Congratulations to Andrew Rodas, Justin Reinsma, Martin Hagen, Ethan Hildebrant, Cole Wilson, Trent Molacek and Micah Larson for their success in the classroom and on the mat. The Mustang wrestling team finished ninth among all Division II wrestling programs, posting a 3.243 overall grade point average.

The SMSU men's basketball team ended a great season with a 19-7 overall record. The Mustangs went 15-7 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and won the NSIC Men's Basketball Tournament for the first time in the history of SMSU. Congratulations to head coach Brad Bigler, the rest of the coaching staff and our student-athletes for their accomplishments this season.

The Mustang wheelchair basketball team also concluded its season two weeks ago, taking sixth place in the National Intercollegiate Wheelchair Basketball Tournament held on the University of Illinois campus. SMSU finished the season with an 8-14 overall record.

Next up for the Mustang Booster Club is a great SMSU tradition, the David and Carol Drown SMSU Golf Classic. The Golf Classic is an 18-hole, five-person scramble tournament that will be held on Friday, June 15 at the Marshall Golf Club followed by the awards ceremony, a meal, live and silent auctions, and games lasting all evening.

n Congratulations to Amy Grant, who provided the correct answer to last week's Mustang Hoofprints Question: How many times has the SMSU men's basketball team played the same opponent in the first round of the NCAA Central Region Tournament and its last game of the NSIC Tournament?

The Mustang have done this three times: this year versus MSU Moorhead, in 2008-09 against Northern State and in 2000-01 against Winona State.
