The Canby/Minneota/Lincoln HI and Yellow Medicine East track and field teams both opened their season on Thursday at a four-team indoor meet at Redwood Falls.
In the girls' team standings, St. James finished well ahead in first place with 114 points. Host Redwood Valley came in second with 79 points, while the Lancers (62 points) took third and the Sting (42) finished fourth.
For the boys, Redwood Valley got 114 points to pace the field. St. James finished second with 62 points, closely followed by C/M/L (60) and YME (56).
C/M/L's Leah Jessen earned a first-place finish for the Lancer girls in the 800-meter run, finishing with a time of 2 minutes, 37.88 seconds. She also finished third in the 1,600 run (5:52.85).
Amber Balfany earned YME's lone first-place finish on the day, taking top honors in the 60-meter dash with her time of 8.70 seconds.
Redwood Valley took first place in six of the 13 girls' events, while St. James finished first in five events.
Jacob Pederson had a strong showing for Yellow Medicine East in the boys' competition. He took first place in the 400 dash (55.79) and the 200 dash (24.86), and also had a second-place finish in the long jump with his leap of 18 feet, 9 inches.
The Lancer boys had two athletes earn top honors Thursday. Andrew Swedzinski finished in first in the 60-meter dash (7.60), and Austen Boevette was the top finisher in the shot put with his throw of 36-11.25.
Redwood Valley earned first-place finishes in seven of the 13 events. Randy Juell had three of those victories, winning the high jump (6-3), the long jump (20-5.75) and the pole vault (12-0).
