More than 300 high school students from across southern Minnesota came to Marshall on Saturday to attend TRiO Day at the Southwest Minnesota State University. Students learned about strategies for success in college, as well as checking out some of the many careers and fields of study available to them. At the SMSU environmental science department, Eva Magnuson and Ana San Miguel looked at samples of volcanic ash under a microscope (above) during a breakout session.
Guest speakers, including keynote speaker John Crudele and U.S. Rep. Collin Peterson, were also part of Saturday's programs. Despite federal budget challenges, Peterson said, he continued to support the TRiO programs, which help low-income and first-generation youths to enroll in and complete post-secondary education.
