Southwest Minnesota State senior soccer player Kelly Fitzgerald was named to the 2011 CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-America third team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced.
Fitzgerald is the first soccer player and the 10th SMSU student-athlete in school history to earn CoSIDA Academic All-America honors.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, have a grade point average of 3.30 or above, reach sophomore athletic and academic standings at their current institution and be nominated by the school's sports information director.
A secondary education/English major, Fitzgerald is a three-time Academic All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference selection and two-time CoSIDA first team Academic All-District selection. She has maintained a 3.97 GPA.
This past fall, Fitzgerald led the Mustangs with six goals and two assists for 14 points. She ranked ninth in SMSU history with 17 goals and is 10th in career points (38). She was named All-NSIC third team.
