MCC duo, RTR’s Carr deliver on Day 2

Nepp, Thony both reach the medal stand on Saturday; Knights’ junior surprises with 4th in triple jump

ST. PAUL - After placing sixth at shot put on Friday, Murray County Central sophomore thrower was completely drained before Day 2 of the Class A state track and field championships on Saturday.

But, Nepp still had some work to do on Saturday as he was one of 17 throwers in the discus.

"(Saturday) morning, when I was laying in bed, I was like, 'It was a long day (Friday), I don't really want to be here,'" Nepp said. "'But I suppose I should see how I do.'"

Russell-Tyler-Ruthton’s Jada Carr goes through her strides in the triple jump, during prelims at the Class A state track and field championships Saturday at Hamline University in St. Paul. Carr finished in fourth place with a distance of 35 feet, 6 1/4 inches.

It turned out that Nepp had a good reason to get up on Saturday morning.

Sitting as the 11th seed prior to Saturday's final, Nepp unloaded on a toss of 147 feet, 3 inches to take third place. Ottertail Central's Steffan Stroh won the discus with a throw of 159-5.

Sufficed to say, Nepp was much more excited, and stunned, than he was just hours prior to the throwing events at Hamline University in St. Paul.

"I was expecting to place a lot higher in shot than I would in disc this year," Nepp said, "But I guess whatever happens happens."

It took just two throws before Nepp had the mark that put him high on the podium.

"My fellow thrower Sam (Udermann of Foley), he said my block was way better than the throw before."

Joining Nepp on the podium Saturday was teammate Jack Thony, who finished in fourth place in the 100-meter dash. The Rebels junior blazed down the scorching track on Saturday for a time of 11.27. Breckenridge's Michael Whitney clinched the 100 dash title with a time of 11.13.

"I came out of the blocks pretty fast," Thony said.

But, he added, "Fourth place is alright, but I want to be state champ. I got another year, I'm going to work hard on everything. Hopefully, I can come back and do better than I did this time."

Thony stayed busy, also competing in the long jump, where he finished 16th with a leap of 19 feet, 6 1/2 inches. Also pulling double duty on Saturday was Westbrook-Walnut Grove/Red Rock Central's Jeff DeCock, who finished 16th in the high jump (6-0) and 14th in the long jump (19-11 1/4). On Friday, DeCock competed in the triple jump, finishing in 12th (41-5).

But the best jumper in the area came in the girls' triple jump, where Russell-Tyler-Ruthton's Jada Carr was looking to exceed expectations. The Knights' sophomore needed to get in the 35-foot range in order to secure a spot in the triple jump finals, securing a leap of 35 1 1/2 in the prelims to get in.

"I didn't come all this way to not get into the finals," Carr said. "I came to do some damage."

Sitting in sixth place after two jumps, Carr saved her best for last, breaking an RTR school record with a distance of 35-6 1/4, finishing in fourth place. Winning the event was Melrose's Hailey Brinkman with a jump of 37-7 3/4.

"I was so excited," Carr said after posing for family photos and showing off her new medal.

"I was seeded 11th, so to go to fourth place feels so good. I didn't expect to do that well. ... I had the old school record and I broke it again."

Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd's Sara Melom finished the state championships with three medals after taking eighth in the 100 (12.97), and along with Morgan Munsterman, Jacinta Roggenbuck and Katie Deyo, finished fourth in the 4x100 relay (50.23). On Friday, Melom finished third in the high jump.

In other area action on Saturday, the Yellow Medicine East 4x800 relay team of Jacob Carroll, Coltyn Schuler, Isaac Rillo and Adam Saveriego finished in 17th with a time of 8:46.34. Canby/Minneota/Lincoln HI junior distance runner Nick Stoks was 13th in the boys' 1,600 run at 4:40.15, and LQPV/DB's Alaysia Freetly finished 14th in the girls' 1,600 (5:38.96). In the pole vault, WWG/RRC's Chloe Arfsten finished in a tie for 14th with Pelican Rapids' Alexis Marty, clearing a height of 8-3.
