MARSHALL - The Marshall A's used eight scoreless innings from starter Brandon Wilhelmi and 10 runs from its offense to defeat the Canby Knights 10-0 in eight innings Tuesday night.
Along with the eight scoreless innings, Wilhelmi struck out four and allowed just two hits for the A's. His strong performance came at the perfect time for the A's (8-3 overall), who snapped a three game losing streak.
"I thought (Wilhelmi) pitched a great game and we played really well defensively," said Culhane. "It was the exact ballgame we needed after what we had going."
Also contributing to the A's success against the Knights (3-6 overall) was a constant stream of base runners. Marshall had 12 hits, four from designated hitter Andrew Kinney.
The A's also earned 10 walks from the Knights' pitchers.
The A's, however, were not content with merely getting on base. Aggressive base-running set the tone for Marshall in the early innings. With runners on first and third in the bottom of the first, A's third-baseman Ben Korger took advantage of an attempt to throw out Kinney stealing second. Both Kinney and Korger were safe and the A's scored the first run of the game. Marshall stole four more bases throughout the game.
"You got to make something happen," Culhane said. "We hadn't been on the board lately. We needed to get guys moving."
The A's would add two runs in third off of consecutive hits from Kinney, Tyler Flattum and a two-RBI double from Kyle Young. Flattum had three RBI in the game.
Three more A's runs came in the fourth inning and two more in the sixth off of an RBI walk for Trever Anderson, who replaced left-fielder Zach Olson, and second baseman Taylor Rignell being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Trevor Citrowske and Justin Fox had the only hits for Canby.
The Knights are back in action for a pair of games Sunday in Canby against Chokio and Dawson.
The A's return to Corn Belt League action when they travel to Raymond to take on the Rockets tonight.
