All hats on deck in Canby this weekend

June 15, 2012

Nobody's quite sure when Canby Hat Daze started, but it's thought to be going on 30 years now.

"I think it started sometime in the late '70s," said Canby Chamber of Commerce President Tony Ourada. "I know it was before my time. Basically some residents decided wearing different kind of hats would be something."

The tradition dwindled and died throughout the years, but the name of the annual festival stuck. Lately there have been attempts to revive the custom, without a lot of success unfortunately.

Everything kicks off tonight with Kids Coloring for Cancer, sponsored by the Relay for Life teams. Three streets around Central Park will be blocked off and the sidewalks will be made available for chalking pictures.

"Saturday all day we'll have the parade, Bingo, a car show, medallion hunt, lots of stuff going on," Ourada said. "Sunday all day is the fly-in and air show at the airport."

The air show begins at 1 p.m. and features wing walkers Tony Kazien, Dick Shulz and James Maroney. Spectators can have their fill of Belgian waffles from 7:30 a.m. to noon and burgers from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

For those who want a little more excitement, airplane rides will be available.

And, of course, they'll keep trying to revive the hat custom.

"This year there's a contest, we're trying to get businesses to display hats in their windows," Ourada said.
