MARSHALL - What's a better way to spend time with your family than being onstage together performing a much-beloved musical?
Several families are taking part in Marshall Area Stage Company's summer musical "The Music Man," which will be performed at 7 p.m. June 22-23, June 28-30, and 2 p.m. July 1, at the Schwan Community Center for the Performing Arts. The show is being directed by Sheila Tabaka.
Mark and Shannon Pedersen and their two children, Jack and Beret, are part of the cast. Mark's mother, Helen Pedersen, is the vocal director for the show.

John Engels, Chris Shuckhart, John Voit and Wes Myers portray the school board members in “The Music Man.”
Engels and his three children are involved with the show and Voit’s entire family is also in the musical.
"Grandma Helen thought it would be cool to have the children involved," Shannon Pedersen said. "But my little girl said 'but mom, you should audition too.'"
So Shannon Pedersen tried out along with her children and was cast as one of the Pick-A-Little Ladies. And after being able to clear some things from his schedule, Mark Pedersen joined his family onstage.
"We haven't been able to do a project with Grandma Helen," Shannon Pedersen said.
Jack Pedersen portrays Winthrop Paroo, who has a lisp.
"When you get used to it, it's a little easier, and sometimes it comes to haunt you," Jack Pedersen said about talking with a lisp for his character.
Mark Pedersen said it's been great to not only have his wife and mother involved with the show, but his kids as well.
"I'm proud of what my children have accomplished," Mark Pedersen said.
Helen Pedersen said she's thrilled that her son and his family have gotten involved with the summer musical.
"I think it's a really neat thing for them and me," Helen Pedersen said.
John Engels said his kids Peter, Sarah and Sophie "talked him into being in the show," after fellow actor John Voit announced auditions at the Minneota High School concert. He is part of the school board/barbershop quartet.
"I wanted to try something new," Sarah Engels said.
"I just love this stuff in general," Sophie Engels said.
Peter Engels was in Minneota High School's production of "Cinderella." He said he's enjoyed the camaraderie that goes on during the show.
As for John Engels, it's been a while since he's done anything musical-related.
"I haven't done any singing for 20 years," John Engels said.
But his kids are enjoying his turn on the stage.
"It's been fun to watch him," Sophie Engels said about her father's performance.
Mark Bosveld portrays one of the leads, Harold Hill, and his daughter, Michaela, is in the children's chorus. Mark Bosveld said he's not onstage with his daughter all that much.
"It's nice to have her here," Mark Bosveld said about this daughter being in the show, while his wife, Jeanette, is in the orchestra. "It's just good that she's getting involved with theater."
Michaela Bosveld said it's awesome being in a show with her father, as it's 2-1/2 hours a night that she gets to spend with him and she wouldn't have had that if she didn't audition. She also appreciates meeting new people.
"It's just so sweet because I get to spend a lot of time with a lot of people I never knew before," Michaela Bosveld said.
