Marshall Blue 11, Tyler 1

Stellar pitching and a barrage of base hits lifted Marshall VFW Blue to an 11-1 win over Tyler in six innings Thursday night in Tyler.

Tyler scored its only run in the bottom of the first inning. Marshall pitchers CD Douglas and Nate Hoeft effectively silenced the Tyler batters after the first, allowing a lone hit the rest of the way.

Douglas, who started for Marshall, pitched five innings, striking out seven and walking four for win. Hoeft pitched the final inning for Marshall, allowing just one hit in his one inning of work.

Starter Brandon Kerr allowed nine runs while pitching five innings for Tyler. He was relieved in the sixth by Abel Romandia who allowed two runs.

Marshall batters found success all night against Tyler, tallying 11 runs off of 13 hits. Connor Winkelman went 3-for-3 with a double and three RBIs for Marshall. Mason Campion and Walker Werpy each went 2-for-2 for the VFW Blue, the former added two walks and the latter had an RBI. Douglas went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and an RBI.

Marshall VFW Blue, now 9-4 on the season, travels to Olivia Monday night.

Sacred Heart 12, Marshall 10

Marshall VFW Orange fell short in its comeback attempt against Sacred Heart Thursday night in Marshall, losing 12-10. Despite scoring seven runs in the seventh inning, Marshall was unable to close the nine-run deficit it faced.

Errors plagued Marshall, as its pitchers allowed only seven hits in the game. Jack Bock got the start for the VFW Orange team and pitched four innings, allowing four runs on one hit with one strikeout. Bock also hit two batters and walked one. Derek Rasmussen relieved Bock in the fifth inning, and gave up eight runs on six hits over his three innings. The Marshall defense committed three errors behind Rasmussen, who was credited with the loss.

Scott Buss led the Marshall offense in its comeback attempt with one hit and three RBIs. Two of Buss' RBIs came on a single in Marshall's seven-run seventh inning.

Matt Thompson added a pair of singles for Marshall, finishing the game 2-for-5. Brent Andries went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Jack Bock pitched in with a double.

Marshall VFW Orange moves to 6-5 on the season and plays host to Tracy on Monday.

Pipestone 2

The Hadley amateur baseball team scored four runs in the seventh to defeat Pipestone 5-2 in Gopher League play Thursday night.

The Buttermakers (4-8 overall, 4-6 Gopher) got a complete game win from Justin Reinsma, who allowed five hits and two runs while striking out nine and walking four.

Alex Petersen got the lone extra-base hit in the game, a double, while Matt Ackerman was 1-3 with two RBI.

Hadley will be in action again on Sunday when they play host to both Jackson and Marshall.
