MARSHALL - No injuries were reported in an apartment complex fire that was reported Saturday night on South 5th Street in Marshall.
At 7:19 p.m. Saturday, the Marshall Fire Department and the Marshall Police Department were dispatched to a fire at 307 South 5th Street, Marshall Police said.
Upon arrival, officers observed smoke coming from the building doors and windows, Police said. Officers attended to evacuate the eight apartments, however, because of heavy smoke, the officers were not able to clear the second floor.
The Marshall Fire Department arrived, and with the use of its air packs, were able to secure all the apartments and made sure nobody was left inside, Police said.
There were no injuries reported. The building sustained substantial water and smoke damage, Police said, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
There were 15 to 20 residents of the complex who were not allowed back into their apartments, Police said. The Red Cross was contacted and temporary shelter was arranged for them.
