The Marshall VFW Blue baseball team took second place in a tournament in Brookings (S.D.) over the weekend, improving the team's record to 15-7 overall.
In the championship game Sunday against Brookings, four Marshall errors doomed the team as Brookings went on to win 5-1. Bryce Johnson, Nolan Schaeffer, Noah Winkelman and Nate Hoeft each had base hits for Blue in the loss.
In Marshall's first game on Sunday, Blue trailed 5-4 after giving up five runs in the top of the seventh. But Wade DeAustin came up with the biggest hit of the day, nailing a walk-off single to give Marshall the 6-5 victory over the Watertown (S.D.) B-team. Noah Winkleman went 3-for-4, and Connor Winkleman had two hits and an RBI in the victory.
On Saturday, Marshall Blue went off for 14 hits in a decisive 7-2 win against Watertown's A-team. Schaeffer led the offensive output with three hits, including a double, and three RBIs. Hoeft went 3-for-5 with two RBIs, and Mason Campion and Alex Marks each had two hits for Blue.
Marshall returns to action today, hosting Luverne at 6:30 p.m. at Legion Field.
