Marshall Independent

A set of nines keyed a Marshall VFW Blue victory over Sacred Heart Tuesday evening. Marshall Blue scored nine runs on nine hits, and also had nine stolen bases during the game.

Sacred Heart and Marshall both committed six errors during the 9-5 Marshall victory, but the Marshall pitchers were able to limit Sacred Heart to just five hits.

Conner Mesman started for Marshall Blue and pitched six innings, allowing five unearned runs on five hits. Mesman also had five strikeouts and two walks. Adam Kovash pitched the seventh inning in relief for Marshall.

Trailing 5-2 after two innings, Marshall Blue used their bats to get back into the game. A five-run fourth inning was spurred by a Nolan Schaeffer three-run home run. Leading 7-5, Marshall added two more runs in the top of the seventh inning to extend its lead to 9-5.

Schaeffer finished the game 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Carl Douglas went 1-for-3 with an RBI and two walks. Connor Winkelman went 2-for-5 from the plate and had two of Marshall's nine stolen bases. Nate Hoeft also added two stolen bases for Marshall Blue.

With the win, Marshall moves to 16-8 and will host Brookings (S.D.) today at Southwest Minnesota State's Alumni Field at 5:30 p.m.
