The Marshall Legion baseball team had a rough finish to the Gopher Classic over the weekend in Minnetonka.
Saturday, the Mudcats gave up six runs in the second inning of an 11-9 loss to Shakopee. Marshall also got off to bad starts in two games Sunday, allowing nine runs in the second inning of a 13-0 loss to Omaha Papillion (Neb.) and surrendering five runs in the first inning of an 8-0 loss to Cheyenne (Wyo.).
Marshall finished the tournament with a 1-4 record.
Against Shakopee, Ben Sanders had a big day at the plate for the Mudcats, who had 14 hits as a team. He went 4-for-5 and had a triple. Colton Peterson and Mason Schnaible each had three hits, and Aaron Mathiowetz and Riley Carpenter each had two hits. Peterson and Carpenter each had a double in the game.
Sanders took the ball to start the game Sunday against Omaha Papillion, but didn't make it through the second inning when Papillion struck for nine runs. Carpenter had the lone hit for Marshall in the loss.
It was Marshall's Jared Holland who took his lumps early in the following game against Cheyenne. He gave up five runs in the first inning but stayed in the game until he was relieved by Michael Danahar in the fifth.
Marshall had just three hits in the loss.
The Mudcats have two games remaining in the regular season. They will play at Brookings (S.D.) Wednesday before wrapping up their schedule Friday at Willmar.
