The American Volleyball Coaches Association recently announced that Southwest Minnesota State is one of 67 NCAA Division II schools to earn the AVCA Team Academic award for the 2011-12 school year.

It is the fifth year in a row that SMSU has received the award.

The award honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale, or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.

The SMSU volleyball team finished the 2011-12 academic year with a 3.58 team GPA.

SMSU, which finished 25-7 last season and advanced to the NCAA Central Region Tournament championship, reports for 2012 fall practice on Aug. 12.
