With a 1-0 win over the Raymond Rockets on Saturday in Bird Island, the Milroy Yankees sealed the Region 11C championship and a No. 1 seed in the Class C state playoffs.
Milroy (16-7 overall) heads back to the state playoffs for the first time since 2009, and will play its first game on Aug. 25 at St. Cloud against an opponent to be determined.
The Yankees and Rockets were slated to play each other again on Sunday, but the game was cancelled due to inclement weather. Because of Milroy's previous win over Raymond and being the only undefeated team remaining in the region, the Yankees were awarded the No. 1 seed.
Andy Schmidt scored the lone run in Saturday's win, leading off the top of the second inning with a double. Justin Schlemmer followed with a double of his own to score Schmidt, giving Milroy the cushion it needed for the victory.
On the mound, Austin Deutz gave the Yankees a dominating performance, striking out seven, holding the Rockets to four hits and two walks, and facing just 30 batters. No Raymond player finished with more than one hit.
Matt Bauer went 3-for-5 for Milroy, while Chris Eichten, Schlemmer and Dean Zwack each tallied a pair of hits.
The Yankees drafted a trio of players to bring to the state tournament: Jeremy Hinderks and Nate Hebrink of Sacred Heart, and Brooks Marquardt of the Kimball Express.
