BALATON - Services for Elda Viola Griensewic, 94, of Balaton will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Balaton. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. today at the Almlie Funeral Home in Balaton, with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. and continuing one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Burial will be in the St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery in Balaton, with a luncheon served in the church social hall immediately following the burial. The Almlie Funeral Home of Balaton is handling the arrangements.
She died Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2012, at the Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Elda Viola Geske was born on Feb. 22, 1918, in Springfield to Emil and Maria (Wiencke) Geske. She was baptized March 12, 1918, and confirmed in 1932 at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in Marshall. Elda attended school in Sodus Township and graduated from Marshall High School in 1936. As a young woman, before she was married, Elda worked at Swift's in Marshall. She often told how she roomed with the Paul and Alma Schwan family in Marshall and babysat Marvin and Alfred.
On Oct. 16, 1941, Elda married Charles Griensewic in Sioux City, Iowa. Eight children were born to this union. They made their home in Salt Lake City, Utah for a short time and moved back to Minnesota in 1944, and then into Balaton that same year. Elda worked at the DAC in Marshall and the Robert E. Milton home in Redwood Falls for several years before becoming a full time housewife and mother.
She was a long-time member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church and enjoyed gardening, study club, quilt making and cooking. As the mother of eight, she had to learn how to stretch a dollar and would often make her family Spanish rice.
She became a resident of the Minnesota Veterans' Home in Luverne in 2009 and recently entered Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls, S.D., where she died Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2012. at the age of 94.
Elda is survived by two sons: Charles of Balaton and Max (and Virjean) of Mankato; four daughters, Mary Chesley of Beaver Creek, Lenore (and Howard) Cadwell of Amesbury, Mass., Louise (and Dale) Schurle of Eden Prairie and Jane (and Ken) Sovell of Marshall; son-in-law, Garvin Murray of Fort Collins, Colo.; 19 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Charles, one son, Byron, one daughter, Vera Murray, one son-in-law, Leroy Chesley and siblings Ruth Daniels, Marvin Geske, August Geske, Ella Schultz, Clara Bauer and Minnie Bertha Geske.
