Tiger tennis goes 0-3 at home invite

Marshall Independent

A short-handed Marshall girls' tennis team dropped three matches at a home invite Saturday at Marshall High School.

Playing without No. 2 singles player Brooke Louwagie and No. 3 singles player Jenna Gannott, who were both at a band competition, the Tigers lost matches to Montevideo, Worthington and Morris.

The Tigers started the day against Montevideo and fell 6-1. Julia Hartmann, Marshall's No. 1 singles player, earned the Tigers' lone win. She defeated Montevideo's Catherine Haugen 6-1, 6-1.

Hartmann won all three of her matches on Saturday and has only lost twice all season.

"She's been doing very well," Marshall head coach Holly Knudson said of Hartmann. "She and Brooke have become very good friends and practice against each other a lot. They feed each other, push each other, and you just couldn't ask for anything more as a coach."

The wind picked up as the Tigers went up against Worthington in a Southwest Conference matchup. The Trojans took the match by a score of 5-2.

Hartmann bounced back from dropping her first set against Worthington's Kate Lesnar and won her match 3-6, 6-4, 14-12.

Marshall's other win came from its No. 1 doubles team of Maggie Roy and Maddie Schoephoerster, which beat Annie Lesnar and Brianna Kempema 4-6, 6-2, 10-0.

Knudson said a stiff crosswind made it more and more difficult on the players as the day went on.

The Tigers third match was their closest, as they fell 4-3 to Morris.

Again, Hartmann was the only singles player to earn a win for the Tigers. She beat Darcey Aronson 6-0, 6-1. Roy and Schoephoerster picked up their second victory of the day, taking down Carly Gullickson and Kjersa Anderson 6-2, 6-0. Marshall's Annie Samuelson and Brittany Soupir also won in straight sets, beating Kaitlin Vogel and Kindra Canbon 6-2, 7-5.

Marshall (4-6 overall) returns to the court Tuesday for a home conference match against Luverne.
