The Summit League named South Dakota State libero Shay Birath its defensive player of the week on Monday after the Marshall grad helped lead the Jackrabbit volleyball team to a 2-0 start to open league play over the weekend.
It was Birath's fifth career defensive player of the week honor and her first of the 2012 season.
The senior had 20 digs in a sweep of Nebraska-Omaha on Friday, then registered 27 digs in SDSU's four-set win over preseason favorite and 2011 Summit League champion North Dakota State on Sunday. Birath averaged 6.71 digs per set.
"Shay has a nose for the ball and reads attackers very well," SDSU head coach Phil McDaniel said in a press release. "She provides great energy to our squad and anchors our defense."
Birath and the Jackrabbits resume conference action Friday against IUPUI, then take on Western Illinois Saturday. Both matches will take place at 7 p.m. at Frost Arena in Brookings, S.D.
