MARSHALL - Three children at home makes for a lot of driving about town, and Karen Meister was concerned about fuel prices, so she went electric.
Since the first part of August, Meister has been doing her in-town driving in a four-seater GEM electric car manufactured by Polaris.
"We attempted to get a golf cart permit at first," Meister said.

Karen Meister and son Jayden, 3, run errands around town in this GEM electric car manufactured by Polaris.
The city authorities were not so enthusiastic about that idea, and Meister eventually bought the GEM in Watkins.
The car gets about 30 miles per charge and charges overnight plugged into a regular outlet, according to Meister. It reaches a top speed of about 35 mph, so it's street legal only in town.
Meister said she can't say how much she's saved using the GEM, but in two months she's put about 700 miles on it just driving around Marshall.
She said the GEM will be available for purchase in Marshall in the future.
