The Marshall volleyball team opened the first day of the Apple Valley Eagle Invite going 1-1. The Tigers started with a win over Alexandria before falling to Lakeville North later on Friday evening.
The Tigers played the Panthers close, but the No. 10 team in the nation was too much for Marshall, which fell 25-23, 25-19.
"We just had some critical errors at inopportune times. When you do that against a team like Lakeville North, that just elevates their game," Marshall head coach Dan Westby said. "We did do some good things. The kids played hard and we really served tough against Lakeville North."
In the earlier match, Marshall faced Alexandria, a team the Tigers had defeated to open the season.
"We had talked about they probably had the advantage because (we won earlier)," Westby said.
Marshall was able to build leads in both games and came away with 25-19, 25-17 victories.
"They came out and played well, but in both sets we jumped out to pretty sizable leads and let them come back," Westby said. "To our kids' credit, in both sets we had a big push at the end to win those."
Over both matches, Kenzie Beekman led the way for Marshall with 23 kills, while Sydney Griffin had seven kills to go with her 23 set assists.
Macie Louwagie was 20-for-22 serving with six aces on the night while Hannah Bennett was a perfect 19-for-19 with 32 digs.
The Tigers will face another familiar team today when they start with Waconia, a team they fell to at the Molten Southwest Minnesota Challenge earlier this season.
"The last time we played them, I thought Waconia came out and played with a whole lot more focus than we did," Westby said. "That certainly has to change, but their coach will have them ready to play. It will be a battle."
