The Marshall volleyball team wrapped up sole possession of first place in the Southwest Conference with a 25-10, 25-12, 25-16 sweep of Luverne Tuesday in Luverne.

It is the second straight year the Tigers have finished with a perfect 6-0 conference record.

The top-ranked (Class AA) Tigers continued their hot serving streak on Tuesday to easily defeat the Cardinals, who finished winless in the conference. Angela Tauer led the charge from the service line, going 17 of 17 with four aces.

"It was a lot of the same," said Marshall head coach Dan Westby, whose team improves to 22-5 overall. "We put some pressure on them again with the serve and that made things a whole lot easier. We had some struggles early on in all three sets. We didn't pass real well and had some passing errors, but were able to correct some of those and after that, we played well."

Kenzie Beekman had a stellar night for Marshall in the win, leading the team in both kills (18) and digs (14). Hannah Bennett added 12 digs and was 8 of 8 serving with an ace.

Marshall's front line of defense also played well, as Emma Doyle registered three ace blocks and Sydney Griffin and Callie Graff each tallied two. Griffin added 19 set assists on the night, while Rachel Sanow had 18.

Westby said it was a special night for the team, especially seniors Tauer and Maci Louwagie, as they captured another SWC crown.

"I think it means a little more to those kids, and it should," Westby said. "This is their last time around and they want to finish strong. It's good to see that those kids are doing everything they can out there for us."

The Tigers now await seedings for the Section 3AA tournament. Their first match will be at home on Oct. 26.

"We've got some good practice days coming up and we're really looking forward to that," Westby said. "We're hoping we can correct some things that can get away from us.

"I just think we need to treat it like we did our preseason practices in August, where we're preparing for our first regular season match. The only difference is these are section matches and they're a whole lot more important."
