Marshall must stay progressive

October 19, 2012
Marshall Independent

To the editor:

On Nov. 6 we have an opportunity to take another big step forward for Marshall and southwestern Minnesota. With a yes vote for the Amateur Sports Center and the MERIT Center expansion, we will continue the growth and economic development of our region. Both centers will bring additional visitors to Marshall. Additional visitors mean additional dollars spent in Marshall. The centers will increase business opportunities, stabilize our tax base, attract additional investment and bring amenities to our families.

By financing the investment with a sales tax, it offers us the means to make the investment via a "use or consumption type tax." Those who spend dollars on lodging, prepared foods and beverages will support the operating budget. The construction budget will also be supported by lodging, prepared foods and beverages as well as other taxable items. As with other Minnesota sales tax, staple items such as groceries and clothing will not be affected.

The impact on Marshall will be to continue our "Green and Growing" philosophy that has served us well for over a century. We are a gem on the prairie and must continue to be progressive to maintain our outstanding community and attract additional people and investment. Let us look at the opportunity as an investment in our future.

Please join your friends and neighbors and "Vote Yes for Growth." Marshall's continued prosperity depends on it.
