A close game in the first half turned into a blowout in the second half as the Winona State football team dominated Southwest Minnesota State on both sides of the ball in a 47-20 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference win Saturday in Winona.
Up 14-7 at halftime, the Warriors (7-2 NSIC, 4-1 NSIC South) pulled away with 33 second-half points.
WSU dominated the Mustangs (3-6, 2-3 NSIC South) in just about every statistical category. The Warriors had 300 rushing yards to SMSU's 80, they had 2259 passing yards to the Mustangs' 168, and they had 27 first downs to SMSU's 16.
Warriors star running back Rayon Simmons finished the game with 18 carries for 119 yards and scored WSU's first touchdown five mintes into the first quarter on a 4-yard run.
Winona State quarterback John Teigland also had a big game, completing 16 of 23 passes for 249 yards with four touchdowns. He completed passes to eight different receivers. Tyler Speer was his top target. Speer caught six passes for 91 yards and a touchdown. Alex Jensen had two catches (both touchdowns) for 26 yards.
SMSU's first score came in the first quarter when quarterback Tyler Peschong tied the game up with a 1-yard touchdown run with 5 minutes, 57 seconds on the clock. The team was held scoreless over the next two quarters.
Peschong sustained an injury in the first play of the fourth quarter when he took a blow to the head on a late hit after completing a 15-yard pass to Abe Kos down to the Winona State 5-yard line. He was taken out of the game and didn't return.
Sophomore Charlie Kern stepped in to replace Peschong and scored the first time he touched the ball, evading the defense and scampering five yards into the end zone for a touchdown. He was unable to run the ball in on a two-point conversion attempt and SMSU was down 30-13 with 14:25 left in the game.
Winona State answered with a touchdown and a field goal to put the game away.
SMSU tacked on a final score with 4:01 remaining when Kern connected with Anthony Dean for a 21-yard touchdown pass.
Before he was knocked out of the game, Peschong completed 13 of 22 passes for 121 yards. He was also sacked four times. Kern came in and went 4 of 13 passing for 47 yards with a touchdown.
Cody Condon was SMSU's top pass catcher with six receptions for 61 yards. Abe Kos added three catches for 38 yards.
SMSU's top rusher was Gannon Moore, who carried the ball 10 times for 31 yards.
The Mustangs have two games remaining in the regular season, both of which are at home. SMSU will take on Concordia-St. Paul (2-7, 1-4 NSIC South) at 1 p.m. Saturday and then face Augustana on Nov. 10 to close out the season.
