The Marshall swim team saw several swimmers advance past the opening day of competition at the Section 3A meet Thursday in Hutchinson.
The top 16 competitors and relay teams in each event moved on to Day 2, which will take place Saturday in Hutchinson.
Marshall's Kylie Vermeire and McKenzie Vermeire each qualified for Day 2 in two individual events and with two relay teams. Kylie Vermeire finished third in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2 minutes, 0.10 seconds. She also made finals in the 500 freestyle, which she won with a time of 5:23.22. Marshall's Blythe Bell also qualified in the 500, taking ninth.
McKenzie Vermeire took fourth in the 200 individual medley (2:18.76) and was fourth in the 100 backstroke (1:02.21). She'll be joined in the 100 backstroke final by teammates Ashley Dunn, who finished seventh, and Abby Surprenant, who was 15th. Though her swim didn't qualify her for the state meet yet, Dunn's time of 1:03.1 was below the state cut. Dunn also made finals in the 100 butterfly, where she took fifth.
Surprenant made finals in the 100 freestyle, taking 14th place, and Abby Blanchette was 16th in the 100 breaststroke and will swim in Day 2 of the meet.
All four of Marshall's relay teams will also swim in Saturday's finals.
