Cold shooting dooms SMSU men against Toros

November 10, 2012
Marshall Independent

The Southwest Minnesota State men's basketball team dug itself a first-half hole that it was unable to climb out of in a 64-57 loss to California State-Dominguez Hills Friday afternoon in Disney Tip-Off Classic in Anaheim, Calif.

The Mustangs got off to a rough start in the first half, hitting just seven field goals and shooting 28 percent as they fell behind 33-22 by halftime. They finished by shooting 35.1 percent for the game (20 of 57), including just 4 of 21 from 3-point range.

With all the missed shots came plenty of rebounding opportunities, and it was the Toros who held a hefty advantage on the glass with a 45-34 rebounding edge.

"I thought that they won the hustle game and they were very active on the defensive end, getting tips and turning turnovers into points," SMSU head coach Brad Bigler said. "We had a lot of good looks and weren't able to knock them down. It's really a simple game, getting the ball in the basket, and we weren't able to do that very efficiently today."

The Toros were led by Givon Crump, who scored 14 points and hauled down eight rebounds. Forward DeShaun Freeman was also on the verge of a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds.

The Mustangs were led by Matt Zager in their season opener. He scored a team-high 13 points to go with eight rebounds. At 6 of 11 from the field, he was one of just two Mustangs to shoot over 50 percent for the game.
