SMSU men wrap up Disney Tip-Off Classic with 2 wins

November 12, 2012
Marshall Independent

After defeating North Carolina-Pembroke 77-58 on Saturday, the Southwest Minnesota State men's basketball team closed out the Disney Tip-Off Classic in Anaheim, Calif., with its second consecutive win, defeating Grand Canyon (Ariz.) 69-58 on Sunday.

Three Mustangs put up 15 points against GCU, and each in different fashion.

Lavione West was one free throw away from tying the SMSU single-game record as he was 12 of 12 from the line, and added a crucial 3-pointer to stop a GCU run late in the second half to reach his 15.

The Mustangs (2-1 overall) led 46-34 with just under 12 minutes remaining in the game, but saw that 12-point lead dwindle to just four points over the next six minutes. Vinyard Birch scored on a layup for SMSU to quell the run and West made his only field goal of the game to give the Mustangs a 58-49 lead with 4 minutes, 53 seconds remaining.

"During that stretch, we turned the ball over a couple of times," SMSU head coach Brad Bigler said. "We were pretty good throughout the night, but they did turn us over a couple times and were able to knock down some easy buckets. We ended up having a couple good possessions there, where Lavione West was able to make a couple plays. He hit a three to put us up (nine), which was a big basket for us. Just to kind of get that point spread to where it was and to get us that momentum back."

SMSU turned the ball over nine times on Sunday, but managed to force 13 turnovers for Grand Canyon (1-2).

Halftime Score: SMSU 39, UNCP 28.

Jordan Miller knocked down four 3-pointers to help reach his 15 points. Taking advantage of open space and extra passes, Miller helped the Mustangs neutralize the GCU size advantage.

"A lot of it was, they were going to have a tough time of keeping us in front of them," Bigler said. "So we did a great job with spacing, and as a result of making the extra pass, Jordan was able to get some 3-point shots."

Nick Smith also had 15 points for the Mustangs, making GCU pay for defending him one-on-one down low.

"Nick was getting some post touches," Bigler said. "They were going one-on-one on the block. That's the first time Nick's seen one-on-one this year and he was able to take advantage of his opportunities with a variety of moves, going to his hooks and also catching in traffic and finishing around the rim."

Smith led the Mustangs with nine rebounds, one shy of his second-consecutive double-double. Smith had 12 points and 12 boards in SMSU's victory over UNC-Pembroke on Saturday. Miller had 17 points to lead all scorers in the Mustangs first win of the 2012-13 regular season.

The Mustangs last trailed Grand Canyon 20-19 with six minutes remaining in the first half of Sunday's physical game. An 11-2 run gave SMSU a 30-22 lead at the break. The two teams combined for 57 fouls, with GCU being whistled for 35 to SMSU's 22.

SMSU will look to build on its winning streak as it return home for a non-conference game with Michigan Tech on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Relocated to the PE Gym due to a scheduling conflict, the Mustangs are looking to have a little fun with the Huskies in town.

"We have a theme of 1980s night," Bigler said. "We're looking forward to having some fun with that, trying to get a lot of people out and playing some 80s music. Just try to make it a neat environment."
