Marshall youth give us reasons to be proud

To the editor:

Just a few thoughts on our children of Marshall.

First, our middle school students. I was at the Veterans Day program Nov. 12 at the Marshall Middle School. Veterans Day can be a hard one for this age group to understand and realize the meaning of the day. Yet, during the entire program with two main speaker as well as several students reading their essays, there was not a sound in the gym. I did not see one teacher who had to give any student one of "those looks." They knew it was a time to be respectful and quiet and they were. Great job, middle school students!

Secondly, our state champions girls volleyball team. For the last eight years, I have been there to film our girls. The interesting thing for me is that in order to have our fans in the background of the game, I have to film from our opponents' side. The opportunity this provides me is this. I get to hear all of the comments from the fans of the teams we are beating. I also hear from many players and coaches.

They all say the same thing. What a great team they are in the way they play the game as well as their demeanor on the court. But, almost more important to me is when I hear people talk about our young ladies and how they behave off the court.

I had the chance this year to visit with one of the coaches that we beat this year and she shared how classy our girls are all of the time. They truly do an exceptional job in representing Marshall.

We call them student-athletes for a reason. They are students first and athletes second. When the honor roll comes out in December, check it against the volleyball roster. I will bet we will find many names on both lists.
