Joseph “Joe” DeMeyer

Joe was born Aug. 13, 1943 in Canby, the son of Peter, Sr. and Bernice (Nowak) DeMeyer.

He graduated from Canby High School in 1961 and worked various jobs in the Canby area. Joe honorably served his country in the United States Air Force as an airplane mechanic, serving a tour in Vietnam. After his was discharged, he moved to St. Paul and enrolled in Minnesota School of Business for two years. Upon graduation, he immediately began working for 3M and worked as a data processor until his retirement in January 1997. He moved back to Canby to enjoy his retirement.

In his spare time, Joe liked anything with an engine. He was known to buy an old car, fix it up, drive it for a while and sell it and then he would start the whole process over again. Joe enjoyed anything that had to do with car racing. Since the late 1960s, he has been a pitman for Ardy Eilers Racing Team. After the race season was over, he loved to get into the combine and help Gordy Ferguson with fall harvest. Joe loved to be around people-whether it was going to Subway for coffee twice a day or going to the nursing home to visit his stepmother while she was a resident there.

Joe is survived by his siblings, Alecia (Don) Kottke of Buffalo Lake, Peter DeMeyer, Jr. of St. Paul, Julia Hernandez of St. Paul, Jeanette (Joe) Saucedo of Ham Lake, and Joyce DeMeyer of Baxter; many nieces and nephews; friends, Ardy (Karen) Eilers, Gordy (Kathy) Ferguson, Les (Bernie) Mead and Jerome Chlebecek and many other friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Peter, Sr. and Bernice; grandmother, Julia DeMeyer; step mother, Gert Hable; sister, Maria Gieser; brother, Dr. Orville Hable and great nephew, Brandon Lindeman.

Blessed be his memory.
