Tigers go 1-3 against tough competition in Waconia duals

December 3, 2012
Marshall Independent

Facing two state-ranked teams and two other teams with plenty of talent, the Marshall wrestling squad got in a productive workout Saturday at the Waconia Duals and finished the day with a 1-3 record.

Shakopee, the 11th-ranked team in Class AAA, beat Marshall 57-24, and Milaca, the sixth-ranked squad in Class AA, defeated the Tigers 42-30. Marshall earned its first win of the year over LeSueur-Henderson, 46-26, and lost to host Waconia 51 -27.

It was a lot of wrestling against a lot of tough competition, and Marshall head coach Justin Bouwman felt his team handled the workload admirably.

"Overall, our guys wrestled really well," Bouwman said. "That tournament is always tough. Shakopee brings double, if not triple the number of kids we bring, so they can wrestle a lot of different kids all day. The same with Milaca, which has a lot of tradition. And Waconia, their head coach is really building a strong program. He's got 50 high school kids out for wrestling."

Bouwman was very happy with how his team did against Milaca, especially since the Tigers had to take two forfeits.

With Nick Erbes (120 pounds) and Jared Holland (195) both back from illness, the Tigers were closer to full strength than they were Thursday when they lost a pair of duals at a triangular hosted by Mankato West. The two Tigers each went 3-1 on the day to help provide a spark for their squad. Holland had two pins, and Erbes had two pins and a technical fall.

The Tigers didn't have anyone go 4-0 on the day, but had six wrestlers finish at 3-1. Along with Erbes and Holland, Marshall's Kesmond Willert (113), Riley Roth (138), Justin Varpness (220) and Austin Nath (heavyweight) all finished with three wins.

Nath and Willert each had three pins on the day, while Varpness had two.

"We had five guys get at least two pins, so that got us the extra points when we could get them and kept us close in the duals," Bouwman said.

The Tigers will have their first home competition on Thursday when they face Minneota, the ninth-ranked team in Class A.
