Area boys' basketball

WWG 69, Wabasso 65

The Westbrook-Walnut Grove boys' basketball team withstood a huge game from Wabasso guard Neil Eichten to hold on for a 69-65 win Saturday in Wabasso.

Eichten knocked down six 3-pointers and made 13 field goals on his way to a game-high 37 points.

WWG had a more balanced scoring effort, with five players scoring eight or more points. Taylor Lindaman led the way with 16 points, Shane Buchman added 15 points, and Aaron Hass chipped in 10 points. Reed Bakken also had a solid game with eight points, 11 rebounds and a pair of steals.

Scott Jenniges had 11 points for Wabasso in the losing effort.

WWG outrebounded Wabasso 38-27. Neither team shot well from the foul line, as WWG was 12 of 25 and Wabasso was 8-for-15.

The Chargers (1-0 overall) will host Windom on Tuesday, while Wabasso (0-1) is back on the court today for a home game against Canby.

Struggles from the foul line and the 3-point line hurt the Murray County Central boys' basketball team in a 64-52 loss to Sleepy Eye St. Mary's Saturday in Sleepy Eye.

The Rebels (0-2 overall) went 0-for-13 from the 3-point line and were 12-for-24 from the foul line.

SESM was led by 23 points from Sean Mathiowetz, and also got 14 points from Kansas Adams.

The Rebels' Sam Erickson finished with 12 points and seven rebounds. Seth Bass also reached double figures for MCC, tallying 11 points.

Cole Bly grabbed 10 of MCC's 48 rebounds, and also went 8-for-8 from the foul line with eight points.

Area girls' basketball

Adrian 54, RTR 43

The Adrian girls' basketball team improved to 3-0 on the year with a 54-43 win over Russell-Tyler-Ruthton Saturday in Tyler.

The Dragons had a big edge at the free-throw line, where they went 20-for-31 compared to 3-for-4 for RTR.

Rachel Kopplow went 8-for-12 from the foul line and scored a game-high 12 points. She was the only player to score in double figures in the game. She also led her team with six rebounds and four steals.

Dana Schaefer and Justine Possail each scored nine points for RTR. Allison Pochardt added six points, nine rebounds and three blocks.

The Knights (2-1 overall) will face fifth-ranked Minneota on Tuesday in Minneota.

Area wrestling

Canby goes 2-2 at Watertown Duals

The Canby wrestling team competed in four duals against South Dakota teams Saturday at the Watertown (S.D.) Duals and finished the day with a 2-2 record.

Canby lost to Aberdeen Central 53-12 and fell to Pierre 53-6. The two wins came against Mitchell, 43-29, and Yankton, 54-19.

Quentin Beiningen had one pin and went 3-1 at 126 pounds for the Lancers. Christian Full also had a 3-1 record for Canby, with two of his wins coming by forfeit.

The Lancers will be back on the mat Thursday for a dual against Tracy-Milroy-Balaton in Tracy.
