**SMSU men's basketball team signs guard**

Southwest Minnesota State men's basketball head coach Brad Bigler announced Wednesday that Maurice (MJ) Delmore, a native of Wisconsin Dells, Wis., signed a letter of intent to continue his career at SMSU.

Delmore is a 5-foot-10 guard who is currently a senior at Wisconsin Dells High School. He is a two-time all-conference honoree and earned honorable mention all-state honors last year.

"MJ is a mentally-tough player who makes everyone around him better," Bigler said in a press release. "M.J. is a winner and is a complete guard in many aspects."

Delmore, a three-year letterwinner, has scored over 900 career points and has over 200 assists. He averaged 15.9 points per game as a junior and was averaging 22.3 ppg through three games this season.

"Over the next two years we lose nine players to graduation," Bigler said. "This recruiting class needs players who can make plays with the ball in their hands. We need guys who can create off the dribble and make good decisions in the paint. MJ is an exceptional ball handler who meets those needs. He has the ability to set up defenders and make passes in small windows. He will also stretch the defense with his ability to shoot the 3-pointer. This will allow us to continue playing two point guards at one time."

**9 SMSU softball players earn NFCA honors**

Nine Southwest Minnesota State softball players have been named to the 2011-12 National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-America Scholar-Athlete team, the association announced Thursday from its headquarters in Louisville, Ky.

Christine Borowiak and Kris Penick were seniors during the 2012 season and both made the NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete team. They were joined by current SMSU team members Amy Dreessen, Jennifer Johnson, Rachel Groff, Katelyn Kalkman, Alysse Luttman, Chelsey Rodenkirch and Kailey Hanson.

The award is bestowed upon any student-athlete submitted by a member coach who achieved a 3.50 grade point average or higher during the 2011-12 academic year. Student-athletes from more than 600 schools were honored.

This was the second component of the NFCA's academic award program. In October, the squads with the highest GPAs in each membership category were recognized as 2012 NFCA Top Tean All-Academic teams.

The SMSU softball team opens its 2013 regular season Feb. 22 in Edmond, Okla.
