With nine wrestlers placing in the top six of their weight classes, the Wabasso/Red Rock Central wrestling team was able to take top honors at the Redwood River Riot in Redwood Falls over the weekend. The Bobcats had a team composite score of 190.00 points, 37 points better than second place United South Central.
Five other area wrestling teams also competed in the Redwood River Riot. Canby placed 14th as a team, out of 28 total teams, with a score of 74. Quad County was the next highest finisher, taking 19th with 66 points. Fulda/Murray County Central placed 23rd with 37 points, just one point and one place ahead of Dawson-Boyd/Lac qui Parle Valley. Tracy-Milroy-Balaton/Westbrook-Walnut Grove was the final area team competing, as they took 27th place with 19 points.
Though no area individuals captured first place in their weight class, there were three second-place finishers.
Wabasso/RRC had two of those, as Spencer Jenniges and Tanner Rohlik each were second best at their respective weights.
Jenniges, wrestling at 120 pounds, finished the weekend with a 9-3 record and lost in the championship match to Worthington's Anthony Luft by a 13-0 major decision. Rohlik, at 152 pounds, was bested by Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg grappler Zach Carlson in a 6-0 decision. Carlson finished 13-0 on the weekend, while Rohlik posted a 9-2 record.
The other second-place finish from the area went to D-B/LQPV's Jordan Staab at 195 pounds. Staab had a 7-2 record on the weekend, including a 9-5 decision to Mankato West's undefeated Tyler Jakes in the championship match.
Wabasso/RRC also had a pair of third-place finishers in Mitchell and Jordan Schroepfer. At 160 pounds, Mitchell posted a 10-2 record, whereas Jordan went 14-2 on the weekend at 182 pounds.
The top finish for Canby was Austin Campbell's fifth-place finish at 152 pounds. Campbell went 11-4 in Redwood Falls.
Quad County was led by 285-pounder Jason Mertens' fifth-place finish with a 13-5 record, while Fulda/MCC had a sole finisher in the top-six as Ben Loosbrock went 7-3 at 170 pounds. TMB/WWG did not have an individual place in the top six in any weight class, but was led by Logan Axford's 6-2 record and seventh-place finish at 120 pounds.
