Tiger gymnasts fall to New London-Spicer

Marshall Independent

The already short-handed Marshall gymnastics team was without another contributor Monday night during a 122.84-98.4 loss to New London-Spicer in New London, as floor exercise specialist Shannyn Chelsey joined Nicole Deragisch and Ellie Nordin as Tigers unable to perform in the dual.

"We were down in numbers quite bit," Marshall head coach Lindsay Wolff said. "We still had Madi Schumacher up on varsity for all-around, so she filled all those spots. We also had Ella Kovash up on floor to fill in for Shannyn, and she had a nice routine tonight."

Kovash had a 5.9 on the floor, third best for the Tigers (0-3 overall) and behind their top two all-around finishers, Natalie Rademacher and Meg Ellis.

Rademacher had a 26.25 in the all-around, while receiving Marshall's high score in the uneven bars with a 6.6. Ellis had the high score for Marshall in the other three events, peaking with an 8.05 on the vault. Her all-around score of 27.7 was good enough for second place, while Rademacher took third overall.

"They're stepping it up when the other one's are getting hurt and they're trying to keep the girls motivated and keep our heads up," Wolff said. "It's tough when we're already down a couple people, then you get word that another one can't compete."

The young Tiger gymnasts have an 18-day break before their next competition. Wolff is hoping that the extended time allows her team to heal up and fine tune their routines before resuming its season on Jan. 5.

"We don't have anything until our home invite, so we're hoping this is a time when we can get everyone healed up and get some nice practices in to up our routines a bit before that home tournament," Wolff said.

"This is the time when we get in most of our practice. We've got a couple meets under our belt, so the girls know what the judges are looking for and know what they need to do to get those extra couple tenths in their routines. I'm hoping that after this next week everyone can come back and be full at practice and have a full varsity lineup."
