December 27, 2012
Marshall Independent

The middle game of the Marshall Fastbreak Club Holiday Classic at Southwest Minnesota State's R/A Facility saw the Orono Spartans, coached by one-time Marshall head coach Barry Wohler, defeat the Montevideo Thunder Hawks 57-45 on Wednesday.

Orono (3-4 overall) had 11 players record points and used its democratic scoring to extend a three-point halftime lead into a 12-point margin of victory. Matt Heussner led the Spartans with 11 points and was the only one of his teammates to reach double figures scoring.

Montevideo, on the other hand, had three players crack the 10-point plateau, but only six Thunder Hawks managed to will the ball through the hoop. Jesse Brace had a game-high 18 points in defeat, while Troy Diggins scored 12 points, and Ryan Maroney had 10.

The Spartans play Marshall at 8 p.m. tonight at the R/A Facility, while Montevideo (2-3 overall) faces Minneapolis Washburn at 4:30 p.m. in the day's opening game.
